Winslow Homer (born Feb. 24, , Boston, Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, , Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. He served an apprenticeship with a Boston lithographer, then became a freelance illustrator in New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in and was elected a member in Winslow Homer (), arguably the best-known American artist of the nineteenth century, created three distinctly different bodies of work in the course of his long career: paintings, book illustrations, and illustrations for the pictorial press, the magazine-like illustrated journals of his day.
In Winslow Homer began his eighteen-year career working as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly, which launched in New York in the same year.
